Pierre François Augustin Théophile Carlone was born in Nice on October 11, 1812. It was in France and not in Piedmont that the young Augustin went to study, at the minor seminary of Vence, then at the royal college of Tournon, finally at the Faculty of Law of Paris. His father naturally destined him for a business career. But in 1832, the true nature of Augustin is revealed during a trip to Italy. The young man is enthusiastic about landscapes, about cities of art. Romantic and easily in love, he keeps a diary, sketches, strolls. Back in rue Cujas, his mind is elsewhere; he can't get his license. Carlone then returns to Nice. He divides his time between his family, business and frequent travels. In 1838, he traveled through Savoy, crossed the Mer de Glace, and pushed into Piedmont. Seduced by the Italian peninsula, Carlone decides to also undertake his “Grand Tour”. During his journey, he met numerous artists and scholars, attended salons and workshops, took numerous notes, multiplied sketches, drawings and watercolors.
