From the end of the 18th century, women of French and English high society used it for clothing or decoration. The success of the cashmere shawl in France began with the Egyptian campaign of 1798. Bonaparte's officers brought it back in their luggage. From that moment and for more than 70 years, it will be an essential element of the women's wardrobe as well as a strong symbol of belonging and social success. If in Europe the cashmere shawl is a purely feminine accessory, in India, its country of origin, it is reserved for men, who wear it as a belt or turban. Woven in Kashmir since the 15th century, it is most often rectangular. Initially decorated with flowers, its decoration will evolve towards a plain center ending at both ends with borders where palm leaves called Boteh are inscribed. Shawl manufacturing centers developed in England, Austria, France and Russia. Dimensions: 164 cm x 164 cm Reference: F30 1107 All photos are on: www.antiques-delaval.com
