From the end of the 18th century, women of French and English high society used it in clothing or decoration. The success of the cashmere shawl in France began with the Egyptian campaign of 1798. Bonaparte's officers brought it back in their luggage. It will be from that moment and for more than 70 years an essential element of the female wardrobe as well as a strong symbol of belonging and social success. If in Europe the cashmere shawl is a purely feminine accessory, in India, its country of origin, it is reserved for men, who wear it as a belt or turban. Woven in Kashmir from the 15th century, it is most often rectangular. Initially, decorated with flowers, its decoration will evolve towards a plain center finished at both ends by borders where palms called Boteh are inscribed. Shawl manufacturing centers developed in England, Austria, France and Russia. Dimensions: 168 cm x 164 cm Reference: F30 1108 All photos are on: www.antiques-delaval.com
