Tapestry in wool and silk, outer dimensions 260 x 202 cm
This beautiful tapestry of circa 1770 was probably woven in Beauvais, a centre for tapestry production. It is of beautiful dimensions, not too big, not too small. The main scene in the oval cartouche represents the mythological sculptor Pygmalion, who made the perfect female sculpture. The oval is contained in a faux giltwood frame, and visually suspended from blue ribbons intertwined with flowers, in the Neoclassical manner of Louis XVI.
Tapestries from this period are much rarer than tapestries from the 17th and early 18th century.
This tapestry is in good condition, given the age, with the usual old minor restorations and tears, but it can be hung in the present condition. The colours are a little faded, especially in the background, but overall still in good condition. The tapestry is lined, which is normall the case. Velcro for hanging at the top.
