Roman period (circa 3rd or 4th century AD)
Small zoomorphic bronze artifact with superb green excavation patina (oxidations); The statuette depicts a wolf.
This does not seem to be a variation of The Wolf of the Capitol (Italian: lupa capitolina), famous bronze sculpture part of Capitoline Museum collection in Roma, since 1471 and of which many replicas exist in various places of the world. It s a symbol associated with the mythical legend of Romulus and Remus and the foundation of Rome since antiquity and one of the most recognizable icons of ancient mythology.
The wavy position of the body suggests a turning motion, and its head's features are very characteristic of this animal.
