Object description :

"Ancient Glaoua, 150 X 260 Cm, Hand-knotted Wool, 1950, Aït Ouaouzguite Berbers, High Atlas, Morocco"
Flamboyant hanbel from the High Atlas and Jebel Siroua, Morocco hand-knotted by Berber women of the Aït Ouaouzguite tribe before 1950.
This specific type of carpet has the particularity of being produced with three associated manufacturing methods.
The Glaoua carpet is part of the group of Amazigh carpets. Knotting or flat weaving accompanied by the cord, work that to my knowledge is only encountered for this tribe.
This piece is in very good condition while showing good wear given its age.
Finished at one end in a kilim style, at the other end in fringes, carpet on a yellow background, the colors are completely natural based on plants and minerals.
During the French Protectorate, we witnessed an ambitious policy of preserving and encouraging the art of Berber carpets in Morocco.
A Moroccan Trades and Arts Service was established.
An artisanal and commercial label was created and cooperatives were set up.
The Amazigh carpet differs depending on the tribes where it is made:
The carpets of the confederation of Ait Ouaouzguite tribes, in the Taznakhte region, near Ouarzazate, are the best known.
We find the Glaoua carpet from the High Atlas regions, the carpets from the Middle Atlas, called Achdif, around Meknes and Rabat with the Zemmour or Zayane tribes, and finally, the rural Haouz carpet from Marrakech.
Our model has the colors specific to this genre, white, red, black, golden yellow, orange and different blues.
This piece is in very good condition, and has been professionally and environmentally friendly cleaned.
