Trained at the Académie Julian workshop , he exhibited for the first time at the Salon d'Automne in 1920, of which he became a member. It was at this time that he came under the influence of André Dunoyer de Segonzac, and painted still lifes and figures. Jacques Thévenet exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in 1922. He met the art critic Roger Allard who presented him at Gallimard. From this meeting will be born a large number of illustrated works for Jean Giono, Maurice Genevoix, André Maurois, Roger Martin du Gard, Colette, André Gide, Marcel Aymé, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Marcel Pagnol... He multiplies the exhibitions, mainly in Paris, including one organized by Paul Claudel in his own apartment in February 1940. In 1972, the municipal library of the town of Autun organized a tribute to him by presenting works that he had illustrated and asked him for a conference on the subject which will be published under the title A book painter and his models. He recounts his meetings with writers.
