"Vase Inlaid With Chrysanthemums, Hidemitsu, Japan, Meiji Era (1868-1912)."
Patinated bronze vase inlaid with alloys of silver, gold and copper, most likely shakudō (copper-gold alloy) and shibuichi (copper-silver alloy). The inlaid decoration depicts a bird (sparrow?) sitting on a bamboo branch (take) and chrysanthemum flowers (kiku), a very important symbol of beauty, youth and long life in Japan, as well as a symbol of the coming fall. Every year, on September 9, we celebrate the festival of these flowers, Kiku no gomon.
