The sculpture depicts Shakyamuni Buddha seated in the lotus position. His hands are arranged in the Bhumisparsha mudra gesture, which means “calling the earth to witness”. The sculpture is made of wood covered in red lacquer, with vestiges of the original tortoiseshell gilding.
