"Budai, Golden Wood, China Or Vietnam, 18th Century."
In carved wood covered with lacquer and gold leaf, the Budai sculpture. It represents a bald Buddhist monk, seated, whose robe covers his bare stomach. Budai appeared in Chinese iconography during the Song dynasty and its prototype is probably the eccentric monk Qieci (契此) who lived in the 10th century. This non-canonical image of the Buddha is a symbol of happiness and prosperity not only in Far East Asia, but also in other parts of the world.
