Vase in the shape of a double gourd. The painted decoration shows butterflies flying around the flowers of a blooming peony (botan) - a Japanese symbol of favorable development, wealth and nobility. Various intricately painted ornamental designs are depicted all around.

Glazed, hand-painted and gilded porcelain.

Kutani, signed, Japan, Meiji era (1868-1912).
