"The Centenary Celebration Of The States-general - Emile Vaucanu"
Large and extremely rare engraving by the artist Emile Vaucanu (1864-1894), produced in 1893 after the immense painting by Alfred Roll which is in the Palace of Versailles, entitled: "The Centenary Festival of the States-General in Neptune basin, May 5, 1889. This engraving is extremely rare because it was only produced in 25 copies. This one is number 4. It is countersigned by the artist and bears numerous inscriptions in his hand, including a dedication from 1893. Born in Bernay in Normandy (Eure) in 1864, Emile Vaucanu was a student of William Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury at the Paris School of Fine Arts. In 1893, he participated in the Universal Exhibition in Chicago and in the same year produced the engraving of Alfred Roll's immense painting "The Centenary Festival of the States-General at Neptune Basin, May 5, 1889", which was found today in the collections of the Palace of Versailles. Usually rolled up due to its gigantic size, it was presented during the Versailles revival exhibition in 2020. The engraving made by Emile Vaucanu based on this painting was only produced in 25 copies. It is therefore extremely rare. In 1894, Vaucanu undertook an interesting trip to the Caucasus, during which he unfortunately died in an attack by brigands. His career as an artist came to an abrupt end. He was 30 years old.
