Étienne was his last name and Jouy a pseudonym. In fact, his works published during his lifetime are sometimes signed Étienne Jouy, sometimes É. Jouy, sometimes M. Jouy and sometimes M. de Jouy, but never Étienne de Jouy. However, it is under this name that he is most cited today. He was elected to the French Academy on January 11, 1815, replacing Évariste Parny but was unable to deliver his reception speech due to events. An article in the New Biography of Contemporaries, of which he was one of the founders, earned him another month in prison; the Academy showed him its sympathy when he was released, which displeased the government. At the Academy, he was on the side of the classics and voted against Victor Hugo. Under the Restoration, de Jouy was a constant defender of freedom and, if his work was undoubtedly overestimated by his contemporaries, it was probably partly out of respect for the author himself. After the Revolution of 1830, he served as mayor of Paris until August 9, then was appointed librarian of the Louvre. He died at the Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye, where he had an apartment.
