Rare And Exceptional Secretary Furniture In Precious Wood, Stamped J. Popsel, Louis XV Period

Rare and beautiful Louis XV secretary stamped Popsel, inlaid with rosewood and violet wood. This commissioned piece of furniture is a unique and extraordinary model, specially made by one of the greatest Parisian cabinetmakers in the mid-18th century, for an important figure at the court of Louis XV. Jean Popsel is a cabinetmaker of German origin, born in 1720. He worked for several years as a privileged craftsman in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, before becoming master on July 5, 1755. Until the end of the reign of Louis XV, he remained rue Ferry. He then came to live on rue Saint-Nicolas and did not stop working until after 1785. Known for his harmonious furniture, Popsel created a unique piece of furniture with ideal proportions. This one also bears the Jurande hallmark (JME). This piece of furniture has at its top a gendarme hat cornice made up of a groove and a quarter round; with rosewood and violet wood veneer. In the upper part, two large doors are each decorated with a butterfly-wing rosewood veneer. Around it, a strip cut from the inside, made of violet wood arranged diagonally, forms a moving line. These doors are equipped with original bronze entrances, a lock in perfect working order, benefiting on the left door from an original sliding system and a key from after the 18th century. These two doors open onto a large storage space equipped with two original oak shelves, adjustable on a rack. Furthermore, this piece of furniture has a large flap whose front is also clad with two compositions of rosewood leaves arranged like butterfly wings and surrounded by violet wood also worked in an animated manner. The original lock is in perfect condition, complete with bronze entrance and later key. When opening, the flap is held in place by original brass compasses. This one is dressed in original brown leather with cold-stamped sticker and miter-cut violet wood frame. The interior, in oak, is composed on each side of two drawers whose movement front in rosewood veneer is decorated with an original bronze button and rosette. We also find deep niches of different sizes. Furthermore, this piece of furniture has two other doors in the lower part also inlaid with a composition of rosewood arranged in a butterfly wing shape and surrounded by violet wood moved diagonally. The bronze lock and entrance are original. The interior is made up of a fixed shelf on battens.
