Born in Dresden, at that time the capital of the Kingdom of Saxony, Johnny Buchs studied sculpture in Dresden and Munich. Moving to Montparnasse at the end of the 19th century, he lived in Paris until 1915, when, as a German, he was transported to an internment camp in the Hautes-Pyrénées. In 1917, sick, he was transferred to a camp in Switzerland, and he remained in Switzerland for the rest of his life. Having left behind all his Parisian works, most of them were destroyed or lost and consequently pieces such like this nude woman, possibly a figure of Eve, are rare.
