These stone paving, most often limestone, are cut into squares varying from 15 cm x 15 cm to more than 40 cm x 40 cm. They are decorated at their angles with 1, 2, 3 and up to 4 slate cabochons, generally square-shaped; we sometimes find diamond-shaped cabochons, sometimes round and exceptionally in the shape of clovers.
The stone is generally a cream to beige or light brown limestone coming, for the North of the Loire, from the quarries of Burgundy or the Loire Valley. You can find cabochon paving in Northern Blue or Black Belgian stone. They are also found in the southwest made from softer stones.
The surfaces are often installed in entrances, corridors, small living rooms. They are more rarely used to cover large areas of living rooms or dining rooms, except in prestigious castles.
The thickness varies from 6/8 to 10/15 cm for the oldest paving.
In the 18th century, mechanical water sawing allowed variable thicknesses of 3 to 5 cm. It is possible to remove older paving slabs in order to obtain thicknesses compatible with our modern construction methods (3 cm)
