"Important Bronze “jean Mermoz”, Signed A.ouline – 1st Part 20th"
Important bronze, with green patina, signed Alexandre Ouline (1887-1965). Ouline is known to be one of the representative sculptors of the Art Deco movement and to have worked in France between 1918 and 1940. This bronze represents the bust of Jean Mermoz in the prime of his life. Born in 1901, Jean Mermoz, nicknamed the Archangel, is a French aviator, legendary figure, in airmail. He was also the co-founder of the French Social Party in 1936. He disappeared that same year in flight following an engine failure, at the coordinates 11°08 North, 22°40 West, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. This work rests on a black marble base with a plaque with the inscription “The Prisoners of War & Escapees of Nantais to their President 1938”.
