Baron Lothar von Seebach (sometimes Lothaire de Seebach), born March 26, 1853 in Fessenbach, a former village later incorporated into the commune of Offenburg and died September 23, 1930 in Strasbourg, is a Baden painter, draftsman, watercolorist and engraver, best known for having been, around 1900, the painter of Strasbourg life. He was a member of the circle of Saint-Léonard. Biography Born in 1853 into a German family from the Grand Duchy of Baden, his parents recognized his gifts for drawing and painting very early on and had him study oil painting with Emil von Heimburg, an artist from the The Munich school where he frequented the circles of Karl von Piloty, Franz von Lenbach and Hans Makart. Encouraged by his first sales of paintings, Lothar chose in 1872 to enroll at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, with Ferdinand Keller. In 1875, after his diploma, he joined his family settled in Strasbourg, where his father served as an officer since the annexation of Alsace to the German Empire. Like other painters before him, he set up his workshop in the Hospital tower built in the 14th century. He broke with history painting and turned to still life which allowed him to make a living from his art, while also providing for the needs of his family after the premature death of his father. He exhibited in 1880 at the Paris Salon where his frequent travels allowed him to follow the evolution of Impressionism in the dissident salons. His work will be part of both the tradition of commissioned paintings painted in the studio and a personal work with a specific rendering of nature. His motto was: "I don't paint pictures, only studies." Lothar von Seebach is part of the group of artists known as the "Circle of Saint-Léonard" - named after a hamlet in the commune of Bœrsch. in Bas-Rhin – and which brings together: Paul Braunagel, Auguste Cammissar, Benoît Hartmann, Léon Hornecker, Anselme Laugel, Henri Loux, Alfred Marzolff, Georges Ritleng, Joseph Sattler, Émile Schneider, Léo Schnug, Charles Spindler and Gustave Stoskopf.
