"André Prugent (1882-1965), Dance Show In The Théâtre De Verdure, Oil On Panel"
Charming oil on panel representing a dance show in a green theater, probably the Gamenson Park theater in Périgueux. This oil is signed A.Prugent at the bottom right and dated June 1953, date written in English, which is quite common in the works of this painter (for what reasons?). A.Prugent (1882-1965), native of Périgueux and trader in this city, enjoyed painting with bright and varied colors and an impressionist touch; he thus offered a snapshot of Périgueux life, and painted animated scenes many times at the Campniac tavern, in Barnabé or at Parc Gamenson with its green theater Painting in very good condition. Dimensions: HSP: 33 cm He attended the drawing school whose director was the painter Jean-Louis Daniel who made it his favorite, so much so that at the age of 18 he was already exhibiting his paintings at the Société des Beaux Arts. When he returned from the war he picked up his brushes again: he liked to meet up in the Périgourdine countryside with Emile Chaumont, Gustave Chérifel, André Saigne to take things from life and in a daring style in the movement of impressionism, the play of light, the sun, which gives this region its charm: some of his works evoke Van Goth! In 1929, he was admitted to the French Artists and exhibited there until 1939. Landscape painter, with prolific work, but also portraitist and illustrator, André Prugent is considered one of the most talented painters of the School of Périgueux. In 1965 he exhibited for the last time at the Palais des Fêtes in Périgueux. He was 83 years old! Sources: Dordogne Fine Arts Society 1985.
