The young woman represented here is very similar to the Marquise de Pompadour.
Diane is one of the most important figures in the Greco-Roman pantheon. Goddess of hunting, war and night, she lives in the woods surrounded by nymphs and repulsing the advances of her many suitors. The representation of Diana is recurrent in art since ancient times and many quality ladies have identified with this goddess. From the sixteenth century, many paintings represent favorites or court ladies portrayed in Diana huntress. This fashion persisted until the nineteenth century, reaching its peak in the eighteenth century.
The pastel of the late eighteenth is in perfect condition, the colors are very beautiful.
The painting is sold with its later frame that highlights it very well (the frame has a few small gaps).
