Block manufactured by the firm of John Bolton (1849-1904), he started out as an employee of Howard & Bullough Ltd, manufacturers of machinery for the Accrington cotton mills. This company had a thriving business in Russia and John was part of a team sent to Egorievsk, a town southeast of Moscow. He eventually became director of the company. The family emigrated to the United Kingdom and settled in Bolton and Manchester.
