"Frans Ernst Held: Very Large Bell In Sterling Silver Vermeil, Netherlands, 1st Half 19th Century"
Superb large bell in silver vermeil and bronze made in the Netherlands during the first half of the 19th century.The bell socket as well as the dress are in vermeil. The interior against which the leaf rings is made of patinated metal.
The grip and shoulder are gadrooned. The body is in plain vermeil. The base of the socket and the skirt are molded with friezes of oblique parallel streaks.
The bell is hallmarked:
. Lion in a hexagon for 833/°° silver, used in the Netherlands between 1814 and 1953
. Hallmark from the warranty office, barely legible, for the same period
. Goldsmith's mark: FH under a spoon for Frans Ernst Held, active in Amsterdam, born in 1785 and died in 1849
. Two other hallmarks including a tiny, illegible one.
Superb bell, very impressive by its dimensions and the quality of its silver-gilt, made during the first half of the 19th century by a great Dutch goldsmith.
