Pair of views of Lake Garda
oil on canvas, cm. 55.5x69
Within a gilded and carved wooden frame for a total of cm. 74x87
The two views, coming from a private collection in Verona, depict two views of Lake Garda. The first, with a high mountain in the background - probably Monte Tremalzo - depicts the village of Riva del Garda with its palaces and high towers. The second is a view that is not easy to identify, perhaps still of Riva or one of the neighboring towns.
The canvases, in good general condition, with some small retouches and restorations as evidenced by the photographs attached here, are in our opinion attributable to the hand of the painter Johann Wilhalm Jankowski, a highly appreciated and sought-after landscape artist, known for his views. Comparison with other works by the same artist once again helps to confirm the attribution. See for example the View of Trieste with the Miramare Castle (Dorotheum, 2023), the Landscape with the Chillon Castle (Downington, USA, 2023) or the even more pertinent View of Riva on Lake Garda (Dorotheum, 2021 ): in each of these works we can find the same chromatic palette, the choice to lengthen the shadows and colors of the buildings making them become reflections on the water in addition to the undeniable stylistic correspondence.
