Object description :

"Alphonse Chigot (1824-1917) "zouave, North Africa" Great Military Painter 19th Century, O"
Original oil/cardboard by Alphonse Chigot representing a soldier, zouave, from the 19th century, signed lower left. Format outside frame 35x21cm It is therefore an interesting oil/cardboard by Alphonse Chigot representing a soldier, perhaps a Zouave, I will let connoisseurs judge because that is not my case. The quality of execution is undeniable, worthy of the great painter that he was, a specialist in genre scenes, war, portraits... His touch is very powerful, rapid, his palette is very subtle with a multitude of colors , even in these small formats. Alphonse Chigot, born October 23, 1824 in Graçay and died October 8, 1917 in Valenciennes, is a French painter. Charles Alphonse Chigot was born on October 23, 1824 in Graçay, from the marriage of Jean Alexandre Chigot, employed in the management of united rights, and Françoise Adèle Martin. On March 12, 1855 in Valenciennes, he married Pauline Caroline Sabine Dubreuille. From this union several children were born including Eugène Chigot who would become a painter like his father. He enlisted at the age of 18 and made the African campaign, fighting at the Battle of Isly in 1844. Returning from the army, he came to live in Valenciennes, where his father, a former soldier, had retired. He attended the art academies in Valenciennes from 1850, a student of Julien Potier. Furthermore, he teaches drawing at the Notre-Dame college in Valenciennes, and recreates, in large compositions or on small formats, the war episodes he experienced. He participated in various salons. Towards the end of his life, he was a master very open to plein airism and not very conformist. Many painters like Julien Déjardin, Maurice Ruffin, Lucien Jonas, Charles Paris owe him for having found their true nature, but also Eugène Chigot, his son. Alphonse Chigot died on October 8, 1917 in Valencienne This oil is in good condition for its age, I point out some small gaps in the upper part, most of which will be hidden by a frame, because I am offering this work without a frame Work guaranteed authentic
