"Bronze Tray “a Slave Trader”, Signed A.moreau After V.giraud – Late 19th Century"
Bronze tray with brown patina, signed Auguste Moreau (1834 –1917). Son of the sculptor Jean-Baptiste-Louis-Joseph Moreau and younger brother of the sculptors Hippolyte and Mathurin Moreau, he is recognized for essentially producing exceptional artistic bronzes. Having never received an official award, this notoriety will only come post-mortem. Auguste Moreau was inspired here by the painting “A Slave Trader” by the French painter Victor Giraud (1840-1871). This work depicts a merchant requesting an audience with a nobleman. The slaves are presented, naked, in turn. The edge of this dish is carved with openwork flower and leaf motifs. A look at archaic practices that have now been stopped, this plateau will appeal to history lovers. ******* Period: Late 19th Century Excellent condition.
