Henri Royer is the son of Jules Royer (1845-1900) , creator of one of the most important lithographic printing works established in Nancy, rue de la Salpêtrière. Immersed in the art world, Royer joined the Nancy School of Fine Arts where he met Émile Friant. There he took lessons from Antoine Vierling and Louis-Théodore Devilly and exhibited his first works at the Salon de Nancy, including Struggle between two young typos and Young plasterer. These early successes pushed his parents and teachers to encourage a study trip to the Netherlands in the company of Friant, who would then exert an influence on Royer.

On his return in 1888, he enrolled at the Académie Julian in Paris where he was a student of Jules Joseph Lefebvre and Gustave Boulanger. In 1890, he debuted at the Salon with the painting entitled Le Vagabond, for which he received an honorable mention. The Scene from the Life of Bacchus produced in 1892 earned him the 3,000 francs Lehmann Prize. In 1898, he won the Salon prize and its 10,000 francs for his painting L'Ex-voto, and also a gold medal at the fine arts exhibition on the occasion of the jubilee of Emperor Francis. Joseph in Vienna. It is also this painting exhibited with, among others, In Flanders in the evening, which earned him the silver medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1900. He was named knight of the Legion of Honor on December 14, 1900. In 1901 he was offered the direction of the women's workshop at the Académie Julian, which he accepted. In 1906, he participated in the decoration of the Villa Majorelle in Nancy.

When the First World War broke out, he was first incorporated into the 41st Infantry Regiment. he was awarded the Croix de Guerre on November 17, 1915, and the Military Cross on August 10, 1916. Subsequently, Henri Royer joined the 1st Engineer Regiment camouflage section on November 1, 1916. He was promoted to officer of the Legion of Honor on August 11, 1931.

His trip to Brittany in 1896 had a profound impact on him and until the end of his life, Royer focused on painting the people of the place. “He had just discovered that the grave Armorica was the homeland of his art.” When he stays in Brittany, it is in Audierne, then in Primelin at the foot of the Saint-Tugen chapel.

He died in Neuilly-sur-Seine on October 31, 1938.

In 2008, an exhibition was organized in Audierne to pay tribute to the painter.
