Early 19th century
Box and boxwood, brass strapping
Embossed paper portrait of Louis XVIII under glass
Dimensions : D. 8 (cm.)
This profile portrait of King Louis XVIII, based on the original by the sculptor Auguste François Michaut, uses all the codes for representing the Bourbon family's return to power. The King's bust is turned to the left. The king is shown in uniform and wearing multiple symbols of power: the orders of Saint-Louis, the Legion of Honour and the Holy Spirit.
This is an interesting testimony to royalist fervour during the Restoration.
Condition report: restoration to the boxwood surround and wear from use.
