Ivory Coast, Baoulé people, first half of the 20th century, superb “Ndoma” portrait mask representing a female face with idealized features recalling the memory of an aristocratic woman renowned for her beauty and elegance. Performing in the last part of the “Gba-Gba” dance, this mask, although ritual, is also a masterpiece of sculpture. It is probably the work of a master sculptor who knew how to magnify this work of wood. The features are symmetrical and refined, the volumes are harmonious, the smallest details of the face are represented and the hairstyle is treated with sophistication.
