Gilt brass
Diameter: 45 cm
(accidental damage)
Also known as an offering plate, this large circular dish in chased gilded brass with repoussé work is centred on a central round medallion in relief around which a series of friezes of pomegranates, leaves and palms run concentrically.
The edges are incised with friezes of oak leaves and flowering gadroons.
Trace of a handwritten inscription on the reverse, probably "33"?
In Christianity, pomegranates are a symbol of chastity and resurrection.
This dish was considered a liturgical object where alms were collected after celebrations.
