Portrait of a man of letters
Oil on board, cm 42 x 31
With frame, cm 66 x 55
This work represents an elegant profile portrait of the Lombard school of the sixteenth century. The effigy, portrayed here with elegant composure, would seem to refer to a scholar or a high-ranking character, as denoted by the red fabric jacket and cap. The hat, in fact, was a fashion accessory considered indispensable for men of the past, acting in all respects as a sign of distinction for the highest social classes.
Depicted here in profile according to the numismatic tradition of the ancient medallion, particularly widespread in Italy between 1450 and 1500 thanks to the production of Pisanello, the effigy presents particularly vibrant details, that allow the viewer to get a very precise idea of the physiognomic aspect of the humanist in adulthood. The profile representation allowed to emphasize the characteristic features of the person, and at the same time to idealize and stylize the figure, making it recognizable even eliminating the physical defects; without dwelling exclusively on the face, the profile portrait allowed to focus attention also on the way of dressing, gestures, pose.
As often happens in the portrait genre, the silhouette of the protagonist emerges from a neutral solid color background, in this case of green color, a trick that allowed to enhance the silhouette of the main subject, focusing on it all the attention of the viewer.
The portrait of this writer fits into the vein of portraiture cultured, and in particular in the famous tradition of the representation of the "Illustrious Men", works collected often in series portraying personalities and benefactors particularly influential of the time. The portraits, both painted and sculpted, took on a celebratory and commemorative role very important in Renaissance society, valued by the clients as real objects symbol of their status quo and their earthly fame, as well as their wealth
