Antique Thai Holy Monk Ratanakosin Gilt Bronze Phra Malai Buddha

A rare gilded and lacquered bronze figure of Phra Malai visiting hell, cast standing on a lotus base, carrying samghati and an alms bowl around his right shoulder below him in hell are several emaciated figures.

Phra Malai was a Buddhist monk who accumulated so much merit that he gained great supernatural abilities. Using his powers, he traveled to the various Buddhist hells, where he encountered the suffering inhabitants and implored their living loved ones to do merits on their behalf.
