A walnut casket with concealed money box.
Italian, late 16th / early 17th century.
Measures 20 x 15.5 x 10cm.
The front of the casket is carved in relief with foliate swags flanking a grotesque mask, the mouth is carved open to deposit coins. The casket sides are decorated with stippled decorated in the form of foliate scrolls. The interior of the casket is separated into two sections, the main beneath the top opening lid, the other accessible from the base and would contain the coins deposited into the beasts mouth.
