Fernand Maillaud (1862-1948) Retours d'estives oil on canvas signed lower left 54x65cm Original frame in wood and gilded stucco 71x83cm framed Born in Mouhet en Berry in 1862, died, of a carpenter father and a mother a schoolteacher, he learned drawing in Paris, and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts. He frequented Paul Gauguin and the group of post-impressionist and symbolist artists of the time. He lives in Paris but regularly returns to Berry and Limousin. In the 1900s, he stayed in Fresselines then in the Vallée Noire. He was interested in rural life and the scenes of cattle fairs and Sunday markets. Fernand Maillaud's fame goes far beyond France. The artist is internationally recognized. From 1910, he exhibited all over the world, in Brazil, Argentina and Algeria. It was during this period that he built his villa, “La Florentine”, on the heights of Toulon and “Renabec” in Guéret. Also a cabinetmaker, he creates exceptional, refined furniture. He designs and creates furniture, in harmony with himself. He also initiated original work in the manufacture of tapestries, through the use of new materials. He died in 1948 in Paris.
