Jacob Jan Coenraad Spöhler (1837, 1923)

Jacob Jan Coenraad Spöhler (Amsterdam, 1837-1923) was a Dutch painter. Spöhler, also Spohler, was the son of the painter Jan Jacob Spöhler and Catharina Wilhelmina Elisabeth Giethoorn. He remained single. He was the brother of Johannes Franciscus Spöhler, who also became a painter. A student of his father, Jan Jacob Spohler (1811-1866), Jan Jacob Coenraad Spohler also studied with Jan Willem Pieneman (1779-1853), an artist considered by most to be the founder of 19th-century Dutch painting. Spohler trained under Pieneman in Amsterdam, but is also known to have worked in Haarlem and Brussels. Spohler was skilled at painting Dutch seasonal landscape scenes, often featuring sailboats, windmills, and fishermen, as well as ice skaters, ice fishermen, and snow sledders. He lived and worked in Amsterdam. His works are imbued with a sense of romantic idealization, in part enhanced by the artist's use of light brushstrokes that emphasize the calm beauty of the natural world. He has exhibited at the Living Masters exhibitions and in Groningen and Rotterdam, among others. The painter died at the age of 56 in his hometown of Amsterdam.
