"Fisherman With Shell - Jean-baptiste Carpeaux - Terracotta Stamp Susse Frères"
The Young Fisherman with a Shell is one of the first works of Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux. The model was created in 1857 during the sculptor's stay at the Villa Medici in Rome. He understands that his art must free itself from the weight of academicism and the classical canons acquired during his training. According to him, the artist must confront reality and gain in realism and spontaneity. Carpeaux then remembers a young fisherman he observed on a Neapolitan beach. The child's only attribute is a cap on his head, a fisherman's net is placed on his left thigh. Caught on the spot, he holds an empty shell to his left ear with both hands. Carpeaux pays here a vibrant tribute to his master François Rude and his Young Neapolitan Fisherman playing with a turtle.
