"Joseph Meissonnier (1864-1943) Spring In Provence"
A broad and modern touch, flat areas of paint mixed directly on the panel, the light and the beautiful colors of spring in Provence for this work by the Avignon artist Joseph Meissonnier. The work in good condition (only a few micro-streaks due to the grain of the wood and much less visible in reality than in the photo which enlarges them) is offered in a pretty carved wooden frame which measures 32.5 cm by 41 cm and 28 cm by 36 cm for the panel alone. It represents a landscape with almond trees in bloom, animated by a cart on the path. A cheerful, lively and luminous work, signed lower left Born in Avignon on May 4, 1864, this painter was part of the “Group of Thirteen” created in 1912 by Clément Brun where he became friends with Joseph Hurard. He participated in a first exhibition on December 21, 1912 which was a great success, followed by a second exhibition on December 18, 1913, which was also the last of the Group. He died in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon on November 4, 1943.
