Oil on canvas by the American painter William Baird 1847-1917 of the Barbizon school. The painting represents a mare and her calf in the meadow, the oil on canvas is signed lower right. The painting is in very good condition as is its gilded fluted frame. William Baird continued his training in the workshop of Adolphe Yvon, son-in-law of Horace Vernet. He paints forest landscapes from Fontainebleau to Barbizon. He travels to Brittany in Switzerland as well as on the Cote d'Azur. He lives at No. 3 rue d'Odessa in Paris. Works by Baird appear in numerous museums in France, Rennes Chambéry and the United States.
