The company was founded by Achille Ditesheim in 1881 in the watchmaking town of La Chaux-de-Fonds.
The Ditesheim family, a Jewish watchmaking family, owned several businesses in the area. In 1885, two brothers, Léopold and Isidore joined him and the name of the company became L. A. I.
Ditesheim from the combination of their initials. It later became L. A. I. Ditesheim & Frère when another, anonymous brother joined it.
In 1905, the company adopted the name Movado, which means "always on the move" in the international language of Esperanto.
Movado has registered many other trademarks over the years. Within 20 years, the company had more than 80 employees and was known internationally for its wide variety of pocket watches.
In 1969, Movado merged with Zenith and Mondia to form Mondia-Zenith-Movado.
Like every Swiss watchmaker, Movado suffered from the “quartz crisis” of the 1970s and became a dormant company in the 1980s, existing only in name.
In 1983, Movado and Zenith separated and Movado was bought by American Gerry Grinberg, who fled the communist revolution in Cuba. Today, the Movado brand is part of the global Movado Group, Inc.
