Stunning porcelain snuffbox, with domed lid, finely inlaid with gold filigree and (micro-) mother-of-pearl mosaics on 7 of its sides. The hinge, and frame of the lower part and the lid, are made of "pompone" Gold-plated brass.
Middle of 18th century, Louis XV period
Probably England
The various architectural landscapes, framed in fretwork storerooms in rocaille shape - typical of the Louis XV era, and foliage motifs (on the 4 sides, on the underside of the snuffbox, under the box, on the top of the lid but also inside of the lid) are made up of towers and different European buildings and architectural church castle,... while the top of the lid represents a large Chinese pagoda with several floors, and in foreground a chinese junk on a river, in front of a bridge.
Very good condition.
Decoration of rocaille frame on the back of the box, which seems incomplete, is original (firing defect?)
The surface of the porcelain is deliciously irregular, with a very glossy glaze on all faces (2 light wear point in coins). The light visible through the transparency of the porcelain shows its extreme fineness and high quality (this also shows that it is not an enamel applied on copper or brass)
Gold-plated brass frame is also in perfect condition,
Stunning refined and fantastic collection item, rare (due its inlaid manufacturing and its raw materials)
