"“napoleon On Horse”"
French school of the 19th century: “Equestrian portrait of Napoleon I”, oil on double-sided reuse zinc plate (an animated landscape on the back) 55 x 43.5 cm, mounted in a superb Louis-Philippe frame with splendid gilding 69 x 59 cm. Slightly large frame, traces of wood-eating insects on the back, the plate, a little warped, was hung on the wall through a hole at the top. This finely made painting is probably a copy around 1840 of an original that I have not found, but the majesty of the Emperor carrying the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor, proudly mounted on his white horse ( probably Marengo), bare head and cocked hat in hand in front of a landscape background, is sufficiently present to make this painting extremely desirable.
