"Chalice, Louvain 1775, Sterling Silver, Johannes Theodorus Craninckx"
Sumptuous mass chalice in solid silver. Designed in a very sober style, its dome foot is topped by a baluster which in turn supports the partly gilded cup. On the foot are the four regulatory hallmarks of the city of Louvain for the year 1775 and of the master goldsmith Johannes Theodorus Craninckx. This goldsmith was born in Louvain in 1722, obtained his master's degree in 1748 and was several times dean of the corporation. He died in 1780 but his widow continued his workshop until the end of the eighteenth century. Several works by his hand can be found today in the collections of Belgian museums and in church treasures. The chalice weighs 500 grams.
