An exceptional piece that will delight any collector of Asian art. Much more impressive in real life than in the photos !
The extinction of mammoths, around 10,000 years ago, means that they are a species considered fossil and therefore not protected by CITES. The trade in mammoth ivory is therefore completely legal. If this mammoth ivory is used today as a material by sculptors, particularly Chinese ones, it is because it remained hidden in the frozen earth (permafrost) for more than 10,000 years. It can be white at heart but is very often colored on the surface by the oxides present in the earth. It is a rare and precious material !
