Portrait of a man, circa 1940
Oil on canvas, signed lower right,
Titled on a label on the back
H. 81 cm - W. 54 cm
Born to a French father and a mother Russian, Boris Buchet is one of the artists from Eastern Europe who settled in the Montparnasse district during the interwar period. A student of Jean Souverbie at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants alongside artists from the Ecole de Paris.
From his teaching of Cubism, Boris Buchet retains the solid volumes and dynamic points of view. Close to the avant-garde, the artist develops a universe between monumentality and contemplation. Remarkably composed, our portrait of a man is very modern with its original pose and its gentle melancholy.
