Provenance
Private collection, The Netherlands
This design for an as yet unidentified gate was made during the second half of the eighteenth century in Holland, as evidenced by the use of ‘Pieds de Rynlant’, Rhineland feet, which were in general use in this area. While the main structure of the building and its severe Doric columns are consistent with the Neoclassical style that was adopted from France, the central sculpted ornament crowning the gate still has elements of the preceding Rococo style. The flanking sculptures consisting of shields, spears and helmets are however again more Neoclassical in flavour, and the design is therefore likely to date from the earliest years of the Neoclassical style in The Netherlands.
