"Antonio De Las Peñas, Dolorosa And Saint John The Evangelist, Terracotta, Dolorosa Signed, 1834"
Dolorosa and Saint John the Evangelist, terracotta, 18 cm. Dolorosa signed, Antonio Peñas 1834. Antonio de las Peñas y León was one of the most important clay sculptors in Seville in the 19th century. He won a gold medal in the fine arts competition organized by the Economic Society of Friends of the Country in 1835. In 1871, he won the first medal in the competition of the Protective Society of Fine Arts of Seville. He was a very prolific author and his small sculptures with traditional themes enjoyed great success both nationally and internationally, since many travelers of the time acquired his works. The fact that one of the pieces we present is signed is very interesting since there are very few that are.
