"Pedro Atanasio Bocanegra And His Workshop, The Apparition Of The Virgin At Saint Cajetan De Thiène"
Apparition of the Virgin to Saint Cajetan of Thiène, Pedro Atanasio Bocanegra (Granada, 1638-1689) and his workshop. Oil on canvas 152 x 102.5 cm. This great work from the Baroque school of Granada represents the appearance of the Virgin of the Abandoned to Saint Cayetano of Thiene, which would coincide with the same period when the saint would be canonized by Pope Clement X, in 1671. This date is also significant . . in the life of the artist to whom this painting is attributed. Pedro Atanasio de Bocanegra is one of the most important Baroque painters of the Granada school, alongside other figures such as Alonso Cano or Juan de Sevilla. In 1676 he was appointed painter to King Philip IV. The numerous commissions he received at the time multiplied the action of his workshop, as evidenced by numerous works from his second stage in 1671. In this painting we find obvious influences from the great master Alonso Cano in the treatment of the virgin's hair and in Saint Cayetano where we feel the hand of Pedro Atanasio.
