The original Louis Benjamin Audemars company was founded in 1811 in Le Brassus and was a brand particularly known for its complicated watches. In 1885 it went bankrupt and was liquidated.
In 1885-86, three successive companies were founded by four nephews of Louis Audemars: Audemars Frères, François Audemars Fils, Louis Audemars & Cie.
Audemars Frères was founded by brothers Charles-Henri and Hector Audemars and flourished until around 1910, when it was put into liquidation by a Russian customer who had "forgotten" to pay a very large invoice.
Charles-Henri and Hector made beautiful and complicated watches and their company is today the best known of the three later companies.
