ANIME LANDSCAPE Original pencil drawing by Pierre LETUAIRE (1798-1884) Pierre Letuaire was born on August 6, 1798 in Toulon. He became the friend of a student of Anne-Louis Girodet, the Marquis de Clinchamp, who had just opened the first painting studio in Toulon. In 1823, he succeeded Laurent Julien as professor of drawing at the college of Toulon, a position he held until 1867. He was accepted as a member of the Académie du Var in 1835. The same year, he innovated by creating courses free drawings, including industrial drawing courses open to masons, carpenters and other professionals. It was for this voluntary activity that he was decorated with the Legion of Honor in 1860 by Napoleon III during his second visit to Toulon. In 1837, he followed Constantine's expedition of which he brought back views and portraits. In 1840, he exhibited his large composition An Episode of the Army of Algeria in Toulon; an attack by Bedouins in a parade. Pierre Letuaire became press correspondent for the magazine L'Illustration in 1844 and remained so for a quarter of a century. He contributes to the illustrations of several newspapers and magazines Le Mistral, La Provence Artistique et Peinture and Le Monde Illustrated.
