"Large Genovese Styletto 17-18th"
This large styletto is in my opinion of Genoese origin, and although the relationship is obvious with Corsican stylettos, I will be careful not to assert a Corsican origin for this object. The main characteristic of this object is the thickness of the blade and its slight curvature. It is in its discovery state, uncleaned, unrestored.
BLADE: It is a strong, thick blade, the back of which is guilloché. Counter-edged on the last 8.5 cm near the tip. A small crown-shaped punch is visible 1 cm from the start of the blade on one side.
Length of the blade = 21 cm, Width near the handle 2 cm, thickness in the middle of the blade 0.7 cm
HANDLE: It is apparently made of very dark twisted wood (or horn???). Twisted copper wire binding runs from the ferrule near the blade to the pommel.
The handle ends on the blade side with a brass ferrule, and on the opposite side with a sort of flat flower-shaped pommel, also in brass.
It is difficult to date this stylus exactly. In my opinion it is at least from the 18th century, but the strong thickness of the blade, the style of the guilloché work and the general shape would rather suggest an older work, from the second half of the 17th century.
It is a beautiful object that is pleasant to hold in the hand.
