Object description :

"French School Of The 19th Century - Construction Of The Stone Bridge (corneille)"
View of the city of Rouen from Ile Lacroix, between 1822 and 1827. Oil on canvas 34 x 46.5 cm The wooden spire was destroyed in 1822 and a new neo-Gothic spire was built from 1827. In 1789 , an engineer named Lamandé proposed a new bridge. To guarantee the integrity of the port basin, he located the planned crossing at the tip of Lacroix Island. In 1810, Napoleon I came to visit the city. He promised the creation of the stone bridge and kept his word. However, it was not until 1829 that the bridge was finally completed. Called Pont de Pierre during its construction, it became the Pont Circonflexe (due to its shape), then the Pont d'Angoulême, then Pont d'Orléans in 1830 before becoming the Pont Corneille in 1848. It was destroyed by the French engineers during the entry of the German army into the city.
